Editor’s notes: Think back to the mid-2010s and you’ll probably remember the immense popularity of adidas and Yohji Yamamoto’s Y-3 Qasa High.

The ninja silhouette was the go-to sneaker for followers of all-black fashion throughout the decade. There’s no doubt that the “Triple Black” rendition was (unsurprisingly) its most popular finish, and you’ll likely still get to catch the odd pair gliding the streets to this day.

For me, it’s impossible to imagine adidas Y-3 without thinking of the Qasa High, and when I look at the new Ultraboost 22, it brings me back to that (much) simpler time.

In Yamamoto’s words, “Y-3 is a deep examination of the blend of sport and style and the tension caused by blending tradition with all things modern.” In the case of the Ultraboost 22, this rings especially true.

Year after year, flagship Ultraboost technology has undergone a series of updates much like Nike’s Air Max line, making its latest iteration a natural fit for a new era of Y-3 sneakers.

At first glance, the racing silhouette’s cageless pull-on construction, flexible Primeknit upper and elastic straps evoke the Qasa’s distinctive layering, albeit bolder, thanks to its three-Stripe pattern.

Additional details such as the heel clip and loop make it clear that the sneaker was created as a tribute to what is arguably Yohji’s best work with adidas, signaling a new era rooted in archival design.
