Ten unanswered questions from Trae Young’s interview with JJ Redick
This Morning JJ Redick’s Podcast The old man and the three released its final episode with none other than Trae Young as a guest. Earlier, I highlighted the ten most important parts of the interview. However, there were a few glaring omissions. Below are ten topics that we (I) would have liked to hear from Young.
The Atlanta Hawks parted ways with head coach Lloyd Pierce on March 1, 2021. Following the move, the team embarked on a magical playoff run that worked its way past winning the Finals of the Eastern Conference. It would have been interesting to hear Young’s thoughts on the decision, the timing, and a thought about his first NBA coach.
Following Pierce’s departure, Nate McMillan became interim head coach before signing a multi-year contract in July 2021. I know fans would love to hear Young’s thoughts on McMillan as a coach versus his predecessor. .
After the Hawks’ deep playoff run in 2021, everyone got paid – Young, John Collins, Clint Capela and Kevin Huerter. Team president Travis Schlenk brought almost everyone back, a decision he now regrets. I wish Redick had asked Young about Schlenk’s comments about his regrets about firing him. Also, how well do the two communicate about roster changes? Does Young have any influence on the decision-making process?

The ‘Adidas Trae Young 1’ had the strongest debut of any iconic sneaker since Michael Jordan’s ‘Air Jordan 1’. But years before Young’s shoe became a bestseller, he had to choose between several sportswear companies. Hearing stories about this decision process would have been so interesting. Did he really come close to signing with Puma?
Adidas Trae Youth 1
As I wrote above, the ‘Adidas Trae Young 1’ was a hit. Since Redick was also an Adidas athlete, I wish I could get some information from Young regarding the ‘Adidas Trae Young 2’. Companies are working on future versions of iconic shoes many years in advance. For example, Adidas is probably working on the third or fourth version of Young’s sneaker line right now.
January 26, 2020
The day Kobe and Gianna Bryant passed away was one of the worst days of my life. I remember watching the Hawks play the Wizards in shock. I detailed this game in an article. Young was very close to the Bryant family, and it would have been interesting to know more about how he navigated his way through that painful day and found a way to win against the Wizards.
March 11, 2020
2020 has only gotten worse over time. As the Covid-19 virus began to take off in the United States in March 2020, it became clear that change was coming. The NBA ultimately suspended the 2019-20 season with the Hawks still playing one game against the Knicks. I’ve detailed this weird game here. I wish Redick had asked Young about that surreal moment, and then about the very long offseason that followed for the Hawks.
Young is happily engaged to his college sweetheart. Not trying to be messy, but I need to know what (if anything) came of his snap with actress and model Zendaya. We need real journalism in these difficult times!
Klutch, LeBron James
Young’s career off the court reached new heights after signing with Klutch Sports. He became the face of major national advertising campaigns (Sprite, State Farm, Adidas). It would be interesting to know more about the decision to change representation and his relationship with LeBron James.
Despite only playing four seasons in the league, Young already has an acrimonious relationship with NBA officials. Redick should have asked Young about the rule changes this season, and better yet, what’s the craziest thing he and/or an official has ever said to each other.
